The entire script, apart from a brief eighth of a page at the beginning and end, was set at night, as the story occurs in the span of just one night shift at the diner. As much as it hurt, physically and emotionally, that the majority of the shooting schedule had us working on location from sunset till sunrise, it provided an exciting opportunity to explore the darkness in the story emotionally. In a practical sense it also gave us an empty canvas from which we could shape the image and the overall feel of the film. Knowing that going in, it became a very practical and tangible anchor and a reliable constant for most of the shoot. I could work my way back to the comedy elements - whilst maintaining a cohesive, yet constantly evolving, feel to the image.
